Trinidad

Trinidad along with its sister island, Tobago, was once dubbed as the 'Rainbow country' by the South African Bishop Desmond Tutu because of the abundance of its floral growth and the diversity of its population. Once courted by every Western colonial power in Europe for its oil and natural gas, Trinidad is today a much sought out holiday destination. The island's capital, Port-of-Spain boasts impressive shopping centres, restaurants, modern resorts and active nightlife. For those who are looking for some quiet, the island has to offer numerous natural attractions, calm waters, and fine beaches.

Vacation rentals in Trinidad

Vacation rentals in Trinidad range from vacation cottages, villas, and condos to cabins, apartments and duplexes. Whether you are travelling single or in groups, you can choose from one bedroom to several bedroom homes. These vacation homes come furnished with all possible amenities that are required for a comfortable and relaxed stay. Besides, they provide space and privacy that only a home can provide. Maid services are included in the package and you can hire the services of a cook and additional housekeeping staff to take care of your needs. The vacation homes are ideally located amidst scenic surroundings and provide easy access to the sightseeing attractions and beaches.

Activities

  • Beaches: The rural northeast coast of the island remains largely untouched by tourists. The rugged beaches of stunning beauty give you a true taste of Trini life.
  • Fishing: Both deep-sea and freshwater fishing are rewarding activities on the island. You can fish for Spanish mackerel, wahoo, kingfish, bonito, dolphin fish, yellow tuna, grouper, salmon and snapper in the abundant waters. An increasing number of boats are available for hire.
  • Carnival: Trinidad is the birthplace of calypso, steel drum music and the limbo. It is little wonder then that the island seems to be in a perpetual spirit of celebrations which gain momentum and find expression in the carnival which takes place in Port of Spain. Trinidad’s bustling city grooves to a permanent beat during the world’s hottest carnival. The run-up to carnival starts immediately after Christmas when the artists perform their latest compositions and arrangements. The festivities reach the climax at the beginning of Lent.
  • Bird watching: Spot hundreds of Trinidad’s bird species at Asa Wright Nature Centre, or the scarlet ibis at Caroni Bird Sanctuary.
  • Hiking: Enjoy hiking or cycling in Trinidad’s coastal mountain range, which boasts spectacular waterfalls, wildlife and ruggedly gorgeous coastline.

Dining

The food in Trinidad reflects the rich diversity of the population. While you are here, we recommend that you try local specials such as stuffed crabs and chip-chip, spicy rotis mixed with vegetables and ground meat. The drink of choice is a fresh rum punch flavoured with Angosuta Bitters.

  • La Bastille: Housed in a one-storey cream coloured house, this grand restaurant of Port of Spain serves classical and conservative French cuisine.
  • Apsara: The restaurant serves sumptuous North Indian cuisine. The dishes here are a delight especially tandoori specialties and there are many dishes that will please the vegetarians.

Entertainment

  • 51° Lounge: This is where the smart crowd hangs out. There is entertainment most nights but you are advised to go after 11 if you want to avoid the crowds. There is a strict 'elegant casual' dress code and an age limit of 25 years and older to enter the bar.
  • Mas Camp Pub: This is Port of Spain's most dependable nightspot. Music is by DJ or live band. You can also dine on reasonably priced Creole meals.
